Singer Makes It Clear She Is “Not Making Music For White People”

Lizzo, the 34-year-old musician, emphasized in a Vanity Fair interview that her music reflects her black experience, denying claims of creating music for a “white audience.” Concerned about her chart-topping songs becoming popular among whites, she noted, “This is probably the biggest criticism I’ve received.” Despite this, Lizzo remains steadfast, asserting, “I am not making music for white people. I am a black woman. I am making music from my black experience.”

Born Melissa Jefferson, Lizzo views her music as a personal healing journey. She strives to empower young Black individuals, emphasizing the need for self-love anthems. Responding to critics, she expressed disbelief at being labeled as not making music from a black perspective, stating, “How could I not do that as a black artist?”

In a separate context, Kanye West commented on Lizzo’s weight, arguing against the promotion of unhealthy body perceptions, stating, “It’s actually clinically unhealthy.”
