Doctors reveal that eating walnuts causes several positive health effects

Walnuts are considered one of the most nutritious nuts because they contain healthy fats, fiber, protein, vitamins, and antioxidants. Doctors say they are especially rich in omega-3 fatty acids called ALA, which support both heart and brain health. These nutrients help lower “bad” cholesterol, support blood circulation, and reduce inflammation throughout the body. Regular walnut consumption has also been linked to better blood vessel function and a lower risk of cardiovascular disease.

Walnuts are also known for supporting memory, focus, and learning. Since the brain relies heavily on healthy fats, the omega-3s and antioxidants in walnuts may help protect brain cells and slow age-related cognitive decline. Their antioxidants and polyphenols also fight oxidative stress, which is connected to conditions like heart disease and diabetes. Doctors explain that walnuts can strengthen the body’s natural defenses when included in a balanced diet rich in whole foods.

Another benefit is appetite control. Walnuts contain protein, fiber, and healthy fats that help people feel full longer and maintain steadier blood sugar levels. Even though they are calorie-dense, moderate portions can still support weight management. A serving of around 12 to 14 walnut halves contains about 180 to 200 calories. Experts stress that “the key is moderation,” because overeating walnuts may contribute to weight gain over time.

Walnuts may also improve sleep because they naturally contain melatonin, magnesium, and tryptophan, which are linked to relaxation and better sleep quality. In addition, they provide nutrients like folate, copper, manganese, phosphorus, and vitamin E that support energy production, bone health, and the immune system. Doctors recommend storing walnuts in airtight containers in the refrigerator or freezer because their healthy fats can spoil quickly and become rancid.

Despite the benefits, walnuts are not suitable for everyone. People with tree nut allergies can experience severe reactions, including anaphylaxis, and should avoid them completely. Eating large amounts may also cause bloating, gas, or digestive discomfort. Doctors also advise caution for people taking blood-thinning medications because omega-3 fatty acids may have a mild blood-thinning effect. Overall, walnuts are described as “a nutrient-rich option” that can improve health when eaten wisely and in moderation.
