Simon Marks, 37, unwittingly stumbled upon history when his car got stuck in his backyard. Upon closer inspection, he heard an unsettling sound and noticed his driveway giving way. “The pavers kept on cracking with an eerie sound, and it opened to a whole new revelation,” he recounts.
Uncovering a mysterious object beneath, Simon and his father excavated a WWII air raid shelter. “My dad saw it and instantly said it’s an air raid shelter,” Simon exclaimed. Online research confirmed the shelter’s wartime origin, likely concealed by a previous owner during house construction.
The duo plans to restore and preserve the shelter, hoping it becomes a historical monument. Simon emphasizes the importance of remembering WWII, stating, “Just because the war is over and long past, the period shouldn’t be forgotten.” They envision the shelter as a tangible link to history, offering visitors a glimpse into the challenging times of the past.
