Cleaning an oven is often seen as a difficult and time-consuming chore, but Nana’s simple method offers an easier and more natural alternative. Instead of relying on harsh chemical sprays or heavy scrubbing, this technique uses just a few basic household items: a dishwashing pod, a heatproof casserole dish, and water.
The process begins by preheating the oven to 200°F (93°C). A casserole dish is filled with water and a dishwashing pod is placed inside it, then set on the middle rack. This setup creates a steam-cleaning effect that helps loosen grease and soften baked-on food residue.
As the oven heats for about an hour, the steam spreads throughout the interior, activating the cleaning agents in the pod. This gentle combination of heat and moisture breaks down stubborn grime, making it much easier to remove without intensive scrubbing or strong chemical products.
After the heating cycle is complete, the oven is turned off and allowed to cool slightly. The interior can then be wiped down with a damp cloth, with most dirt lifting away easily. For tougher spots, a soft brush can be used, or the process can be repeated if needed.
This method is also considered safer and more eco-friendly than traditional oven cleaners, as it avoids the use of toxic chemicals. It can be especially useful in homes with children or pets and helps maintain a cleaner oven when used regularly, improving efficiency and reducing buildup over time.
