Amazing Trick With Vicks VapoRub: A Natural Spider Repellent?

“Living in an old house comes with a certain level of compromise.” In this case, that compromise turned into a growing spider problem. What started as the usual quirks of an older home—drafts, creaks, and occasional insects—eventually escalated into daily spider sightings that made the space feel uncomfortable and overwhelming.

The homeowner tried multiple natural fixes, but none delivered lasting results. “After trying countless remedies, from peppermint oil and tea tree sprays to chestnuts placed strategically around the house, nothing seemed to make a lasting difference.” Cleaning webs and sealing cracks only helped briefly, as the spiders kept returning.

A friend suggested an unexpected solution: Vicks VapoRub. “Vicks contains menthol, eucalyptus oil, camphor, cedarleaf oil, and thymol, all of which produce strong odors.” The idea is that these strong scents may interfere with how spiders navigate their environment, discouraging them from staying in treated areas.

“Using Vicks as a repellent proved straightforward.” Small amounts were placed on cotton balls and hidden behind furniture, near windows, and in corners where spiders appeared most often. “Within days, there seemed to be fewer unwelcome encounters.” While not scientifically proven, the results were noticeable enough to continue.

Other methods like peppermint oil, vinegar, citrus peels, and diatomaceous earth are also commonly used alongside sealing entry points and reducing clutter. “Most spiders are harmless and even beneficial because they consume other pests.” In the end, “no repellent guarantees a spider-free home,” but even small reductions in spiders can make a home feel more comfortable.
