In Millharbor, a “massive fire erupted in the historic Mariner’s Block district.” It began around 3:42 p.m. inside the century-old McAllister Textiles Building and quickly spread to nearby structures, filling the skyline with thick black smoke, rapidly escalating emergency situation.

Eyewitnesses reported a strong burning smell before flames burst through upper windows, forcing pedestrians, vendors, and residents to flee. Traffic stopped as crowds gathered at a distance while emergency crews arrived. Residents described panic and confusion.

More than 100 firefighters responded from multiple stations, but dry timber and strong harbor winds allowed the fire to spread, damaging nearby buildings and collapsing part of a roof. Several firefighters suffered smoke inhalation. Authorities struggled with shifting winds.

“The cause of the fire remains under investigation.” Officials have not ruled out electrical failure or other accidental causes, and no critical injuries among emergency personnel were reported. No widespread evacuations were required beyond nearby blocks.

Despite the destruction, there were “no confirmed fatalities,” and residents called the outcome miraculous. The community has begun offering shelter, meals, and support to those affected as recovery starts. Aid efforts are continuing across the city.
