My Fake Date Changed Everything at My Ex Husbands Wedding

After thirteen years of marriage and two daughters, Max left his wife for Claire, his personal trainer, saying she no longer looked the way he wanted. “Men are visual,” he told her. “Claire is perfect.” When Max later invited her to his wedding and pointed out that her invitation included a +1, he added, “Come to my wedding with Claire and bring the girls. Your invitation includes a +1, but we both know you don’t have anyone.” Hurt but determined to attend for her daughters, she asked her coworker and friend Edward to pretend to be her boyfriend.

At the wedding, Max immediately noticed Edward. Instead of being impressed, however, he mocked her and said, “Your boyfriend? No one would date you. Especially someone like him.” He even accused her of paying Edward to attend. Rather than argue, Edward calmly presented Max with a wedding gift: an old pair of oversized trousers that he had worn when he was much heavier. Edward explained that he had once believed he did not deserve happiness because of his body.

Edward then revealed why the experience had affected him so deeply. The woman had told him that Max spoke about her body in the same hurtful way, and their conversation helped him change how he viewed himself. He told Max, “She didn’t fix me,” he said. “There was nothing wrong with me that needed fixing.” His words made it clear that her value had never depended on changing another person or meeting someone else’s expectations.

Later, Edward admitted that he had agreed to the fake relationship because he wanted her to understand that she did not need to prove anything to Max. When her daughter overheard the cruel comments, she asked why her mother had pretended Edward was her boyfriend. The mother finally admitted that she wanted Max to believe somebody wanted her. Her daughter hugged her and replied, “But we wanted you here.” Those simple words meant more to her than anything Max could have said.

As she left the wedding with her daughters, Max asked what would happen between her and Edward. She realized that he still believed her worth depended on whether another man wanted her. She walked away without answering. Looking at her reflection in the car window, she noticed that, for the first time, she wasn’t checking her body or wondering what Max would criticize. She simply saw herself. Then her youngest daughter called, “Mom! Go!” She smiled, opened the door, and got in.
