Why Drooling in Your Sleep Happens and What It May Reveal

Finding drool on your pillow can feel embarrassing, but it is usually a normal part of sleep. As you enter deeper sleep, the muscles controlling your jaw, mouth, and swallowing relax. Your mouth may open slightly, while swallowing happens less often. Saliva continues to be produced, so when it builds up faster than you swallow, some can escape through your mouth and reach your pillow.

Your sleeping position can also affect how much you drool. Sleeping on your stomach or side may make drooling more likely because gravity allows saliva to move toward the edge of your mouth. Sleeping on your back may reduce it because saliva is more likely to remain inside your mouth.

Mouth breathing is another common reason. If your nose is blocked because of allergies, a cold, or congestion, you may naturally breathe through your mouth while sleeping. This can keep your mouth open and make saliva more likely to escape during the night.

Certain conditions can also play a role. Acid reflux, for example, may cause the body to produce extra saliva as a way to protect and lubricate the throat. This can make nighttime drooling more noticeable, especially when it happens regularly.

For most people, occasional drooling is harmless and simply means the body is deeply relaxed during sleep. However, a sudden or persistent increase in drooling, difficulty swallowing, choking during sleep, or other unusual symptoms may be worth discussing with a doctor. Otherwise, waking up with a little drool is generally nothing to worry about.
