I found this in a flooded ditch. I caught it and brought it home in a jar.

What seemed alarming at first turned out to be something entirely different — “not a parasite at all, but a Triops — a tiny crustacean often called a ‘living fossil.’” This small creature carries a history that stretches back hundreds of millions of years, existing long before dinosaurs and surviving dramatic changes on Earth.

Triops are remarkable for their resilience. Their eggs can remain inactive in dry soil for long periods, waiting for the right conditions. When rain finally arrives, they hatch quickly, bringing ancient life back into temporary puddles and shallow water. What looks unfamiliar or even threatening is actually a natural process that has repeated itself for ages.

Their presence is easy to overlook or misunderstand. A simple rainstorm can awaken them, and suddenly they appear, “swimming at our feet while we mistake them for something dangerous.” This contrast between appearance and reality highlights how easily something rare and harmless can be misjudged.

The realization changes perspective. What first sparked fear becomes something meaningful. Seeing them not as a threat but as a connection to distant history shifts the experience into something deeper.

In the end, the moment becomes one of reflection and wonder. It transforms “from horror to quiet awe at how the past still surfaces in the smallest corners of our everyday world,” reminding us that even ordinary places can hold traces of ancient life.
