Peanuts: A Nutritious Snack

Peanuts are loved around the world for their rich taste, low cost, and versatility in both sweet and savory dishes. In Brazil, they are used in popular treats like paçoca and pé-de-moleque, while many other cultures enjoy them as snacks, spreads, or recipe ingredients. Besides their flavor, peanuts are valued for their nutrition, although experts remind people that “individual responses to foods vary,” especially for those with allergies or digestive sensitivities. When eaten responsibly, peanuts can be a healthy addition to everyday meals.

Although technically legumes, peanuts have a nutrient profile similar to tree nuts. They contain plant-based protein, healthy fats, fiber, and important nutrients such as vitamin E, B vitamins, calcium, phosphorus, and iron. These nutrients support energy production, metabolism, and general body function. Peanuts also contain antioxidants and compounds like lecithin, which researchers have studied for possible heart-health benefits and their role in helping people feel satisfied after eating.

Because peanuts combine protein, fat, and fiber, they may help people stay full longer and reduce unnecessary snacking during the day. Some research also suggests peanuts can help slow carbohydrate absorption, which may support steadier blood sugar levels when included in balanced meals. Researchers have explored possible links between peanut consumption and lower risks of issues like gallstones or digestive irregularities, though experts stress these are only “general observations rather than guaranteed outcomes.” No single food can prevent or cure disease.

Despite their benefits, moderation is important. Eating too many peanuts may cause digestive discomfort because of their calorie and fat content. People with peanut allergies should avoid them completely, as reactions can be serious. Experts also advise avoiding spoiled or moldy peanuts, since poor storage can lead to harmful compounds. With proper care and reasonable portions, peanuts can remain a flavorful and nutrient-rich part of a balanced diet.
