An active shooter incident caused panic Thursday morning at Corewell Health Beaumont Troy Hospital, north of Detroit. The violence began around “7:08 a.m. in the hospital’s parking garage,” forcing an immediate lockdown and bringing a large police response as staff and patients sheltered for safety.
Authorities later confirmed the suspect was “a hospital employee” who opened fire on a 25-year-old coworker. The victim was shot “twice in the arm,” shocking employees because both individuals worked at the same facility. Investigators have not yet explained what led to the attack.
Because the shooting happened on hospital grounds, medical teams responded within moments. The injured worker was treated in the emergency department and was later reported as “stable.” Hospital officials said he is “expected to recover fully,” bringing relief after the frightening event.
Police quickly located and arrested the suspect “without further incident,” preventing additional harm. Officers then secured the area while investigators began examining what happened and gathering evidence about the events leading up to the shooting.
The attack disrupted normal hospital operations and raised fresh concerns about workplace violence in healthcare settings. Officials have already begun reviewing “workplace security protocols” to strengthen safety measures and help prevent similar incidents in the future. For many employees, the event was a reminder that hospitals—places built for healing—can also face moments of sudden crisis, making preparation and security more important than ever.
