How to get rid of rats and cockroaches with rice: An effective and natural home remedy

Getting rid of rats and cockroaches does not always require expensive treatments or strong chemicals. “One of the most effective tools for natural pest control might already be in your kitchen—plain rice.” Rice works well because its smell and texture attract pests, making it useful as a natural bait when mixed with common household ingredients. This simple method is affordable, easy to prepare, and often preferred by people looking for eco-friendly solutions at home.

For cockroaches, a popular remedy combines cooked rice, sugar, and boric acid. The sugar attracts the insects, while “boric acid acts as the killer by disrupting their systems.” Small balls of the mixture can be placed behind refrigerators, under sinks, or in dark cabinet corners where roaches usually hide. Replacing the bait every few days helps improve effectiveness and keeps the treatment fresh.

For rats, one option uses uncooked rice mixed with plaster of Paris and a small amount of sugar or cocoa powder for scent. After rats consume the mixture and drink water, the plaster hardens internally. Another gentler option combines rice, sugar, and baking soda. According to the article, “the soda reacts with stomach acids, producing gas rats can’t release.” Consistent placement is important for better results over time.

Safety is still important when using homemade pest-control methods. Keep all mixtures away from children and pets, clearly mark treated areas, and avoid placing bait near food-preparation spaces. Checking the areas regularly and removing dead pests quickly also helps maintain cleanliness and hygiene inside the home.

Besides rice-based remedies, natural deterrents like bay leaves, mint oil, cucumber peels, and garlic paste may also help keep pests away. Overall, “rice-based pest control offers an eco-friendly, effective way to reclaim your home without toxic chemicals.”
