Two powerful earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude, struck Venezuela’s northern coast, causing widespread destruction across several communities. The hardest-hit areas included Morón and coastal regions near Caracas, where homes, apartment buildings, and local infrastructure suffered severe damage. In many places, entire neighborhoods were left in ruins as residents struggled to escape collapsing structures.
Authorities have confirmed dozens of deaths and hundreds of injuries, but officials fear the true impact may be far greater. Rescue crews continue searching through debris-filled streets, damaged buildings, and crushed vehicles. Early estimates suggest casualties could rise significantly as emergency workers reach areas that remain difficult to access. Many families are still waiting for news about missing loved ones.
La Guaira was among the worst affected locations. The area around Simón Bolívar International Airport now “resembles a war zone,” with damaged runways, cracked terminals, and heavy debris forcing the airport to shut down. Transportation disruptions have complicated relief efforts and slowed the movement of supplies into some affected communities.
Across the country, daily life has been severely disrupted. Schools remain closed, while hotels and public buildings have been converted into temporary shelters for displaced residents. Thousands of people are spending nights outdoors in streets, parks, and stadiums, fearing additional aftershocks. Basic services have also been strained as emergency teams work to restore stability in damaged areas.
International assistance is beginning to arrive as rescue and medical teams from the United States, Mexico, the Dominican Republic, and other countries mobilize to support recovery efforts. Search dogs, specialized equipment, and field hospitals are being deployed to help locate survivors and treat the injured. Amid the devastation, volunteers and emergency workers continue searching for those trapped beneath the rubble. Despite exhaustion and growing challenges, many remain determined to save as many lives as possible, refusing to let “the final numbers define Venezuela’s fate.”
