Here is the answer: “Should You Pay for Your Coworker’s Gas?”

Resentment can build quietly when one coworker is always driving and the other simply assumes the arrangement will continue. Even if the driver never complains, they may eventually feel that their time, fuel, and car expenses are being taken for granted. A simple conversation can prevent misunderstandings before they become a problem.

You could simply say: “I really appreciate you driving me to work every day. I know gas and everything else adds up, so I’d like to contribute. What would be fair?” This shows that you understand the rides are a favor rather than something you are automatically entitled to. If they are comfortable accepting money, a weekly or monthly contribution can be easier than calculating every trip.

The amount can depend on how far you travel, how often you ride together, whether the driver has to make a detour, and local fuel prices. Someone who is picked up five days a week and adds several miles to the commute may reasonably contribute more than someone who lives directly along the driver’s route.

Money, however, is not the only way to show appreciation. If your coworker refuses payment, you could occasionally buy them coffee or breakfast, treat them to lunch, or give them a fuel gift card. Small actions also matter: be ready when they arrive, give advance notice when you do not need a ride, and understand that they cannot always adjust their schedule for you.

The key difference is between accepting generosity and expecting it. A free ride still involves fuel, mileage, maintenance, time, and flexibility. You do not need to calculate every favor down to the last dollar, but acknowledging the effort can keep the arrangement comfortable. Sometimes a sincere thank-you and an occasional coffee are enough to show that you appreciate the kindness and do not take it for granted.
