3 Years Without a Day Off Then HR Pushed Me Too Far

After working for three years without a single day off, I finally requested my full 90 days of leave. Instead of understanding, HR called my request “too long” and suggested I find another job if I was “this lazy.” I was shocked that years of dedication meant so little when I finally asked for time to rest. Rather than argue, I told them I would work only two days a week until the end of the year, believing it was time to put my own needs first.

What my employer didn’t know was that I had already started interviewing with competing companies. I planned to use my vacation to explore better opportunities and decide what I wanted from my career. For years, I had sacrificed my personal life to meet the company’s expectations, but I was no longer willing to continue the same routine simply because everyone expected me to be available.

However, I struggled with the thought of leaving during the company’s busiest season. I worried that my departure might create extra pressure for my colleagues, who could end up dealing with the consequences. Part of me wondered whether quitting at such a difficult time would make me appear spiteful, even though I had never intended to hurt anyone.

Eventually, I began questioning why I felt responsible for protecting a company that showed so little concern for my well-being. If the business depended on me working without proper breaks, perhaps the real problem was how it was managed. Three years of loyalty should not have ended with insults simply because I needed time away from work.

Now, I’m choosing to prioritize my future and look for a workplace where commitment goes both ways. I don’t want to leave out of revenge, but I refuse to sacrifice my happiness for an employer that fails to respect my limits. Sometimes, walking away isn’t revenge. It’s recognizing that your time, health, and personal life matter just as much as your job.
