My father lost my mother twelve years ago, and for years, he refused to date anyone. Eventually, he decided to start over, joining dating apps and meeting different women. At first, everything seemed promising, but every relationship ended the same way. The women would enjoy their dates, make plans to meet again, and then suddenly disappear. After six women stopped responding, my father began doubting himself. “I don’t understand,” he’d whisper. “They all seemed so happy.”
Determined to discover what was happening, I asked my best friend, Rachel, to go on a date with him. She agreed, and afterward, she told me how wonderful he was. They had talked for hours, and she was happy to see him again. But the next morning, Rachel stopped answering my calls and sent me a frightening message asking me not to contact her. When we finally met outside her office, she showed me anonymous messages threatening her and warning her to stay away from my father. The sender had even included a photograph of them leaving the restaurant together.
I immediately told my father what had happened. He was shocked and agreed to help me investigate. We checked the security cameras at his house and discovered someone had appeared near his driveway after his date with Rachel. The person wore white sneakers with a dark stripe, which reminded me of shoes my aunt Sabrina, my mother’s younger sister, had worn. Sabrina had supported our family after my mother’s death, but she had gradually become distant. When I confronted her with the footage, her expression changed.
Sabrina eventually confessed that she had been monitoring the women my father dated, researching their lives, and sending them threatening messages. She believed she was protecting my mother’s memory and feared that my father moving forward meant forgetting his wife. “I was trying to protect her place in his life,” Sabrina said. I replied, “You were protecting a memory by hurting a living person.” Rachel reported the threats, and my father provided the security footage. Sabrina finally had to face the consequences of her actions.
Months later, my father began dating again and met a woman named Jocelyn. This time, the relationship continued, and he slowly rediscovered happiness. One evening, I heard him laughing while music played in the background, a sound I had missed for years. I realized that honoring someone we have lost doesn’t mean giving up on life. My mother would always be part of our family, but my father deserved another chance at happiness, too.
