I Let My Brother In Law Sell My Hay And Then Asked One Simple Question

After discovering that Russell had taken her late husband Frank’s hay, the narrator went with Merle to Walt Hruska’s farm to confront them. Russell insisted that Frank had given him permission, producing a handwritten note as proof. However, the narrator quickly recognized the document as an agreement from six years earlier, when flooding had destroyed Russell’s pasture. Frank had allowed his brother to cut hay from the north field for that single season, not permanently.

The narrator noticed that the top of the paper had been torn off, removing the date and making the old agreement appear current. Merle confirmed that Frank had granted permission for only one summer. To settle the dispute, the narrator opened Frank’s small notebook and showed them his final entry, which clearly indicated that the remaining hay was intended to feed her cows through the winter.

Realizing the truth, Walt turned against Russell’s claim. Merle demanded that Russell repay the young couple who had purchased the stolen hay and arrange for every bale to be returned by Sunday. The narrator refused to involve the sheriff but stood firm, determined to protect what belonged to her and honor her husband’s wishes. With the evidence against him, Russell finally agreed to make things right.

By Sunday, three trucks and two trailers arrived carrying all **187 bales of hay** back to the narrator’s property. Merle, Walt, and the young couple helped unload the crop, while Caleb carefully stacked the bales inside the barn. Russell reimbursed the buyers, and the narrator shared her remaining pies with those who had helped her.

Throughout the winter, her cows had enough food, and Frank’s notebook remained on the kitchen shelf as a reminder of his love. His final words had helped protect their farm, proving that honesty and determination could overcome deception, even when someone tried to take advantage of a grieving widow.
