For eight years, Carly cleaned Mrs. Whitaker’s house every Thursday. Although she knew the home well, she always maintained a professional relationship with her employer. When Mrs. Whitaker announced she was moving closer to her daughter, Carly assumed their relationship would end with her final cleaning. However, Mrs. Whitaker invited her back on Saturday, asking her to come without her cleaning supplies. “I’m asking you to visit, Carly,” she explained. Curious, Carly arrived with a box of cookies, expecting to receive some unwanted household items.
Instead, Mrs. Whitaker showed Carly a box filled with family letters, cards, and photographs. Carly was surprised to discover that her daughter knew about her and even remembered which day she visited. After Mrs. Whitaker’s husband, George, died, Carly’s weekly visits had become something she deeply looked forward to. Their conversations had helped ease her loneliness, even though Carly had never realized how important those moments were.
“I was lonely, Carly,” Mrs. Whitaker explained. “But that didn’t give me the right to make my loneliness part of what I was paying you to manage.” Carly admitted that she had deliberately kept her distance because she wanted to remain professional and protect her job. Both women had been afraid of crossing a boundary, unaware that they valued their connection equally.
With the working relationship finally over, Mrs. Whitaker asked, “When I move, would you call me sometimes?” Carly laughed, explaining that she had cleared space in her car because she expected to take home some leftovers. Instead, she discovered that their relationship could become something much more meaningful. “Because I want to,” Carly replied when Mrs. Whitaker asked if she would stay in touch.
Before leaving, Carly returned the house key and wrote her personal phone number on a note. “That’s the number you call when you don’t need your house cleaned.” After eight years of keeping their relationship professional, the two women finally had the freedom to build a genuine friendship.
