Is this thing dangerous?

House centipedes may look frightening because of their long, delicate legs and unusually fast movements. Their rear legs are especially long, giving them a distinctive appearance, while their antennae help them navigate dark spaces and locate prey. Although their appearance can be unsettling, these creatures are nighttime hunters that feed on other small household pests.

House centipedes usually enter homes in search of moisture, shelter, and food. Bathrooms, basements, and areas beneath sinks are common hiding places because they often provide damp conditions. Leaking pipes, clutter, and small openings around doors, windows, and plumbing can also attract them. Since they eat spiders, flies, silverfish, and other insects, seeing one may indicate that small prey is available nearby, but it doesn’t necessarily mean your home is dirty.

For most people, house centipedes pose little danger. They generally avoid humans and run away when disturbed, although they can bite if handled or trapped. A bite may cause localized pain, redness, or swelling, but serious reactions are uncommon. Pets may also experience irritation if they try to catch or eat one, so watch for unusual symptoms and contact a veterinarian if necessary.

You don’t necessarily need to kill a house centipede because it can help control other household pests. If you prefer not to have one indoors, carefully capture it with a container and a stiff piece of card. To prevent future encounters, repair leaks, improve ventilation, reduce clutter, seal cracks, and address other insect problems. Keeping window screens intact and removing damp debris near your home’s foundation can also help.

Although their appearance may be alarming, house centipedes are generally more helpful than harmful. If you frequently spot them, focus on identifying the moisture sources, hiding places, or insects attracting them. By addressing these conditions, you can make your home less inviting without immediately resorting to harsh chemicals.
