My In-Laws Gave Their Other Three Children $20,000 for Houses

The envelopes were placed under the Easter plates, each with a name written in Judy’s handwriting. Kim, who was raising two boys after her divorce, opened hers and covered her mouth in shock. Jeff, recently laid off from the Caterpillar plant, struggled to speak, while Stacy began crying over her nursing school debts. Their father, Ron, announced that each would receive $20,000 toward buying a house. He and Judy had sold forty acres of land to help their children get settled.

Emily and her husband, Nate, opened their envelope together, expecting something similar. Instead, they found only a greeting card with a bluebird on the front. Inside, Judy had written, “You two have always been so capable. We never worry about you. Love, Mom and Dad.” Emily was a hospital billing clerk, and Nate worked as a diesel mechanic. They had always managed their responsibilities, but the card left them feeling overlooked. When Ron explained that their independence was a compliment, Emily thanked them politely, even though the disappointment was difficult to hide.

On the drive home, Nate finally spoke. They had $6,200 in savings and paid $725 in monthly rent. He wasn’t angry with his siblings or his parents, but he wished someone would worry about them for once. “I’d just like to be worried about one time,” he said. Emily understood exactly what he meant.

Instead of arguing or asking for help, they decided to work harder. Emily took a second job waiting tables at a truck stop on weekends, while Nate continued his regular mechanic job and accepted emergency repair calls during harvest season. He worked late nights fixing combines in muddy fields and repairing machinery by flashlight, sometimes returning home exhausted but carrying extra cash.

For two years, they sacrificed their free time to build their savings, determined to create a more secure future together. Their parents believed they never needed help, but Emily and Nate knew that being capable didn’t mean life was easy. They simply wanted the chance to build a home of their own.
