Smart Home Divorce Surprise

When my husband and I divorced, he kept the house and moved his new girlfriend in. I left without arguing and started rebuilding my life. What he failed to realize was that many of the home’s conveniences depended on services I had been paying for and managing throughout our marriage.

A week later, he called me furiously, demanding that I “fix this pile of stones.” The smart-home controls no longer worked, the security system had stopped functioning as expected, and the irrigation system was no longer operating normally. He could not understand why everything had suddenly changed, unaware that I had been handling the subscriptions, bills, and connected services all along.

After leaving, I canceled the contracts and closed the accounts registered in my name. I had been responsible for those services during our marriage, but the situation was different once I moved out. I was no longer willing to pay for a property I no longer lived in, especially when my ex-husband expected to enjoy everything with his new partner.

My ex-husband seemed to believe that receiving the house in the divorce meant he was entitled to every convenience that came with it. However, owning the property did not make me responsible for its ongoing expenses. If he wanted the smart-home features, security system, and irrigation services restored, he would have to contact the providers, arrange new accounts, and pay the bills himself.

I understood that he was frustrated, but I refused to feel guilty. He had made his choices, and I had made mine. He kept the house, but I reclaimed my independence and stopped paying for a life I was no longer part of.
