Note that if you always sleep on your right side, you should have

Sleeping on your left side may offer several health benefits, especially for people who experience acid reflux or discomfort during pregnancy. Although sleeping position can affect digestion, breathing, and comfort, some popular claims about its health benefits are not supported by strong scientific evidence.

The body’s anatomy helps explain why sleeping position matters. The stomach is located mainly on the left side of the upper abdomen, and gravity can influence how stomach contents move. Research suggests that sleeping on the left side may reduce nighttime acid reflux compared with sleeping on the right, helping limit heartburn and improve sleep quality.

During pregnancy, sleeping on either side is generally recommended, particularly in the later stages. Some healthcare professionals favor the left side because it may offer certain advantages, but pregnant people do not need to remain exclusively on their left side throughout the entire night. Comfort and following medical advice are important.

Claims that left-side sleeping significantly improves heart health or removes toxins from the body are not supported by strong evidence. The lymphatic system helps transport fluid and supports immune function, while the brain has waste-clearance processes associated with sleep. However, there is insufficient evidence that sleeping specifically on the left side dramatically improves these processes.

Side sleeping may also help reduce snoring in some people, although it is not a substitute for treating sleep apnea. On the other hand, sleeping on one side can worsen shoulder or hip pain. Using a supportive pillow between the knees and choosing a comfortable mattress may help reduce pressure and improve sleep.

Ultimately, sleeping on your left side can be beneficial, particularly if you experience nighttime acid reflux. However, it is not a universal requirement for good health. Focus on getting enough quality sleep, choosing a comfortable position, and avoiding large meals shortly before bedtime. If persistent heartburn, breathing difficulties, or pain regularly disrupts your sleep, consult a healthcare professional.
