A dented metal box behind Oakridge Avenue unlocked twenty years of family history

When the hospital called, Nurse Evelyn told me my mother had suffered a severe stroke. I hadn’t spoken to Martha in eleven years, not since leaving our family home. At St. Jude Hospital, she lay weak beneath a white blanket. When she saw me, she grabbed my coat and whispered, “Abigail, promise me you won’t abandon Gabriel.”

I was stunned. Gabriel Vance had disappeared twenty years earlier, and nobody had explained what happened to him. Before I could get answers, my mother repeated his name. I promised to find him, hoping to comfort her. Seconds later, the heart monitor sounded an alarm, and she was gone.

That evening, a nurse gave me my mother’s belongings in a plastic bag. Among a silver ring, two brass keys, and a few dollars, I discovered an old municipal citation from 2012. It accused my mother of leaving wooden crates filled with canned groceries near the fence of the Oakridge municipal dump.

The document listed six separate dates, each with the same fine of forty-two dollars and fifty cents, written in faded red ink. I couldn’t understand why my mother had repeatedly risked being fined to leave food near a dump. She had always taught me to stay out of other people’s business, yet she had apparently been helping someone in secret.

Then I remembered Gabriel. He had vanished when we were young, and although rumors suggested he had run away, my mother had refused to discuss him for years. Now, her final words connected him to the strange citations. I slipped the document into my pocket, determined to uncover the truth. I had promised my mother something I didn’t understand, but I intended to keep my word. I would find Gabriel and discover why she had been leaving food at the dump.
