Never heard of this

An itchy tongue after eating strawberries may seem harmless, but it can leave parents wondering whether their child is having an allergic reaction. In some cases, the cause is pollen-food allergy syndrome, also known as oral allergy syndrome. This happens when the immune system mistakes certain proteins in raw fruits for similar proteins found in pollen, causing itching or tingling around the mouth.

These symptoms are often mild and disappear quickly, especially in children who have pollen allergies. However, not every reaction to strawberries has the same cause. Food allergies and simple irritation can produce similar symptoms, so parents should not assume the reaction is harmless without understanding what triggered it.

If your child complains of an itchy mouth after eating strawberries, stop giving them the fruit and contact a pediatrician or allergist, particularly if the reaction happens repeatedly. Keep track of what your child ate, which symptoms appeared, and how quickly they developed. Although cooking can reduce some pollen-related allergens, cooked or processed strawberries are not automatically safe for everyone.

**Knowing when to seek emergency help is essential.** Difficulty breathing, throat tightness, faintness, or rapidly worsening swelling can indicate a serious allergic reaction. Seek emergency medical help immediately and use prescribed epinephrine if available. Widespread hives or vomiting also require prompt medical assessment. Understanding your child’s symptoms and following an individualized medical plan can help your family manage food reactions more safely and enjoy everyday snacks with greater confidence.
