The Real Purpose of That Part of a Towel

Have you ever noticed the flat strip near the end of a fluffy bath towel and wondered why it feels different from the rest? That section is called a **dobby border**, and it is an intentional part of towel construction, not a manufacturing mistake. While it adds a decorative touch, it also helps give the towel a neater, more structured finish.

A dobby border is the smoother, tightly woven section found near the ends of many bath towels, hand towels, and washcloths. Unlike the main terry cloth area, which contains small loops that absorb water, the border has a flatter surface. It can be plain or feature woven patterns, stripes, and other decorative details. The term “dobby” refers to a weaving technique that creates small repeating patterns in fabric.

One of its main purposes is to help stabilize the towel’s ends and maintain a neat appearance. The tighter weave creates a firmer section that can reduce distortion from everyday use and repeated washing. It also gives manufacturers an opportunity to add attractive designs, making towels look more polished when folded or displayed in a bathroom.

However, the dobby border is generally less absorbent than the rest of the towel because it has fewer exposed loops. This is completely normal, as the fluffy terry cloth section is designed to absorb most of the moisture. The border does not mean the towel is defective or poorly made.

To keep towels in good condition, avoid using too much detergent or fabric softener, which can affect softness and absorbency. Wash them carefully, avoid overloading the machine, and follow the care label. You should also avoid cutting the dobby border because doing so can damage the woven structure and cause unraveling.

Not every towel has a dobby border, and some feature two flat strips near opposite ends. These are simply different design choices. So, the next time you notice that unusual flat section, remember that it serves more than a decorative purpose. It provides structure, creates a cleaner finish, and adds a little detail to an everyday household item.
