This Kitchen Appliance Should Be Unplugged Before Bed to Prevent a Fire Risk

Unplugging appliances when they are not in use can help reduce electricity bills because many modern devices continue consuming power even when switched off. This is known as standby power or “vampire power,” and it can account for up to 10% of household electricity use. Televisions, computers, gaming consoles, and kitchen appliances often continue drawing small amounts of electricity while waiting for remote signals, background updates, or instant-start functions.

Some of the biggest energy consumers include smart TVs, cable boxes, computers, monitors, and gaming consoles. Microwaves and coffee makers with digital clocks also use electricity continuously. Phone chargers, printers, and scanners contribute to the problem as well, even when they are not actively being used. Unplugging these devices or connecting them to switched power strips can help prevent unnecessary energy consumption.

However, not everything should be unplugged. Refrigerators, freezers, washing machines, dishwashers, ovens, and internet routers should generally remain connected. Smoke detectors, carbon monoxide alarms, and essential medical equipment must also stay powered to protect household safety.

A simple way to manage standby electricity is to use switched or smart power strips. These allow several devices to be disconnected simultaneously without repeatedly pulling out individual plugs. Smart plugs and timer outlets can also automatically turn off selected appliances when they are not needed.

The potential savings can be significant. According to the article, standby power could cost an average American household approximately $75 to $180 annually. While unplugging one charger may save very little, targeting several high-energy devices can make a noticeable difference.

Ultimately, small habits can help reduce electricity costs without changing your entire lifestyle. Turning off a power strip before bed, unplugging unused chargers, and switching off entertainment systems are simple ways to avoid wasting energy and keep more money in your pocket.
