At Nearly 103, Hollywood’s Beloved Veteran Continues to Inspire Fans

Ray Anthony became a well-known figure in American music, earning recognition as a trumpeter, bandleader, arranger, and entertainer. Born Raymond Antonini in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1922, he grew up surrounded by music because his father was a bandleader. He developed his trumpet skills at an early age and eventually built a career that connected the golden age of big-band music with later generations of entertainment.

During the 1940s, Anthony gained valuable experience performing with major orchestras, including the Glenn Miller Orchestra. He later formed his own group, the Ray Anthony Orchestra, which became especially successful in the early 1950s. Its polished arrangements combined traditional swing with newer musical influences, attracting audiences across the country.

One of his most recognizable recordings was “Bunny Hop,” a popular dance number that helped establish his reputation. Beyond recording music, Anthony also appeared on television and in films, becoming a familiar face to audiences. His success showed how musicians could reach people beyond concert halls and dance venues.

Anthony’s personal life also attracted public attention. He married actress Mamie Van Doren during the 1950s, and the couple welcomed a son, Perry Ray Anthony, before eventually separating.

As rock and roll and other musical styles gained popularity, Anthony continued performing and recording. Rather than abandoning his musical roots, he helped preserve the big-band tradition through his orchestra and live performances. His career spanned several generations of American entertainment, making him an important figure in the history of swing music.
