Hidden Gift Inside A Desk

After buying a used desk for $40, I discovered an envelope hidden inside. It contained $800 in cash and a faded photograph of a little girl. Wanting to do the right thing, I contacted the previous owner to return the money, but she surprised me by insisting that I keep it. I couldn’t understand why she would give away such a large amount, especially when it clearly meant something to her.

Four days later, a police officer knocked on my door at 3 a.m. He explained that the woman had been hospitalized with chest pains and had saved my number because she trusted me. Concerned, I decided to visit her at the hospital, where I finally learned why the envelope and photograph were so important.

The woman explained that the little girl in the photograph was her daughter, who had died at just seven years old. The $800 was money she had spent years saving for her daughter’s headstone. However, after struggling with grief and loneliness, she eventually gave up on completing it. My simple phone call, made only to return her money, had meant more to her than I could have imagined.

I stayed beside her until her sister arrived. Before leaving, I promised to help arrange the headstone once she recovered. What started with a $40 used desk and a forgotten envelope turned into an unexpected friendship. It also reminded me that even a small act of honesty and kindness can bring hope to someone who has spent years feeling alone.
