The “B” on an automatic gear shift stands for Brake, a driving mode designed to help slow your vehicle without depending entirely on the brake pedal. It is commonly found in hybrid and electric cars, as well as some vehicles with CVT transmissions.
Unlike the standard D (Drive) mode, B increases regenerative braking or engine braking, helping the vehicle slow down more effectively when you release the accelerator. In hybrid and electric vehicles, it can also recover more energy and send it back to the battery.
One of its main purposes is to make driving downhill safer and easier. When traveling down long or steep hills, using B helps control the vehicle’s speed and reduces the need to constantly press the brake pedal. This is important because excessive braking can cause the brakes to overheat and lose effectiveness.
However, B mode is not necessary for every situation. For normal everyday driving, including flat roads and highways, D (Drive) remains the best choice. You should switch to B when driving down steep slopes or whenever you need additional control over your vehicle’s speed.
