Don’t Panic—Here’s What to Do If You Find a Lone Star Tick

A lone star tick attached to your skin can be frightening, but removing it correctly is important. Use fine-tipped tweezers to grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible, then pull upward with steady, even pressure. Avoid twisting or jerking, as this may leave parts of the tick behind. After removing it, clean the bite area and your hands with soap and water.

Avoid using petroleum jelly, nail polish, or heat to remove the tick. These methods can delay removal and are not recommended. Acting quickly and following the proper steps can help reduce potential complications.

A lone star tick bite does not automatically mean you will become sick, but these ticks can spread infections and are associated with alpha-gal syndrome. This condition can trigger an allergy to red meat and certain other products from mammals, potentially causing reactions after eating them.

Over the following weeks, pay attention to symptoms such as fever, a rash, or other unusual changes in your health. If any develop, contact a healthcare professional and explain that you were bitten by a tick, including when it happened. This information can help them assess your symptoms and determine whether further evaluation is needed.

If you experience difficulty breathing or swelling of the throat, seek emergency medical care immediately. Although a tick bite can be concerning, staying calm, removing the tick promptly, and watching for warning signs are the most important steps to take.
