Canada and Mexico hit back with new tariffs after Donald Trump’s executive orders escalate trade war

President Donald Trump imposed steep tariffs on Canada and Mexico, prompting swift reactions from both countries. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau warned of “real consequences for the American people” and announced counter-tariffs of 25% on CA$155 billion worth of U.S. goods. “The actions taken by the White House split us apart instead of bringing us together,” he said.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum also responded, stating, “We have Plan A, Plan B, Plan C, depending on what the government of the United States decides.” She rejected U.S. claims of Mexico’s ties to criminal organizations, arguing that the U.S. should focus on its own drug issues: “They could fight the sale of drugs on their streets, which they don’t do.”

Trump also signed an executive order renaming the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America.” Justifying the move, the order called the Gulf a “crucial artery for America’s early trade.” Sheinbaum dismissed it, stating, “For us, it is still the Gulf of Mexico, and for the entire world, it is still the Gulf of Mexico.”

Despite Trump’s aggressive moves, both Canada and Mexico remain firm in defending their sovereignty.
