Granny’s Cocoa Cream Pie

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup cocoa
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch or arrowroot powder (or 1/2 cup all-purpose flour)
  • 3 egg yolks
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 9″ pre-baked pie shell

Instructions:

  1. In a pot over medium-high heat, combine cocoa, cornstarch, beaten egg yolks, sugar, and salt. Gradually add milk while stirring.
  2. Cook until thick, continuously stirring for 10-15 minutes. A heavy-bottomed pan works best.
  3. “Cream pies take some time to thicken, so stir… and stir,” emphasizes the original article.
  4. Once thickened, beat the mixture smooth and add vanilla.
  5. Pour the creamy mixture into a pre-baked 9″ pie shell.
