Five dead after helicopter crash on Mount Kilimanjaro

Five people died after a helicopter crash near Mount Kilimanjaro during a rescue mission. According to the Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority, the aircraft went down close to Barafu Camp at high altitude. Officials confirmed it was **“a medical evacuation mission.”**

The victims included a Tanzanian guide, a local doctor, a Zimbabwean pilot, and two tourists from the Czech Republic. All were descending the mountain when the crash happened. The helicopter was operated by Kilimedair.

The crash occurred at around 4,700 meters, making rescue efforts extremely challenging. Teams reached the site, but **“all five occupants were confirmed dead at the scene.”** The thin air and remote terrain slowed recovery operations.

The incident took place inside Kilimanjaro National Park, a popular destination where aviation accidents are uncommon. Despite its reputation, the tragedy highlights the risks of flying in extreme conditions.

Authorities have started an investigation to find the cause. Weather, mechanical problems, and operational factors are being examined. Officials are also working with embassies to return the victims’ bodies, while the event has raised concerns about safety during high-altitude rescue missions.
